What I'm Watching This Fall Anime Season 2014

This fall is jam-packed with some promising titles and I'm really excited. We've had a great summer with titles like Glasslip and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, but with those coming to a close let's look at some interesting titles playing this fall. There's too many animes to list in just one post, so here's part one of this awesome list!

Shirobako

Synopsis
Five girls chase their dreams. The story revolves around the everyday troubles and hardships that occur when working in the anime industry, and the results and conflicts that happen day-to-day among the group of girls.

My Thoughts
I guess the latest trend with manga and anime is to tell stories about working behind the scenes on manga and anime. There have been titles like Bakumon, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to, and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun that show the ups and downs of working on manga, and now we get Shirobako that deals with anime. It looks like it will have a similar pace to Servant x Service, but features 5 female protagonists (with not too many love interests in sight). I'm curious, but I don't necessarily have my hopes up that this will be a stellar hit. Mostly because all female cast shows tend to have a particular style that I rarely find funny. But you never know!

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

Synopsis
Piano prodigy Arima Kosei dominated the competition and all child musicians knew his name. But after his mother, who was also his instructor, passed away, he had a mental breakdown while performing at a recital that resulted in him no longer being able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing was perfectly fine. Even two years later, Kosei hasn't touched the piano and views the world in monotone, and without any flair or color. He was content at living out his life with his good friends Tsubaki and Watari until, one day, a girl changed everything. Miyazono Kaori is a pretty, free spirited violinist whose playing style reflects her personality. Kaori helps Kosei return to the music world and show that it should be free and mold breaking unlike the structured and rigid style Kosei was used to.

My Thoughts
I typically enjoy music themed animes, and one with a love story mixed in will definitely keep me interested. The story sounds like just the right amount of teenage angst to be compelling, and will hopefully offer some curveballs rather than be too predictable.

Sanzoku no Musume Ronja

Synopsis
The story is about a girl named Ronja who is the daughter of a chief of a tribe of bandits and lives in a huge castle in the forest with the bandits. The story follows Ronja as she encounters mystical creatures, makes friends with another young child like herself, and experiences life in the forest.

My Thoughts
This project is being done by Studio Ghibli, and my advice is when they create something you watch it. Their production quality is top notch, and I expect this anime to be a visual masterpiece. The story sounds like typical Ghibli fare, so I imagine it will be an interesting watch each episode.

Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji

Synopsis
The story centers around Erika Shinohara, a vain 16-year-old girl who tells her friends about her romantic exploits, but she actually has no boyfriend. She claims that a handsome boy in a candid photo is her boyfriend, but it turns out that boy is a schoolmate named Kyouya Sata. She has no choice but to make him her fake boyfriend. Unfortunately, Sata may look like a sweet person, but he is actually an ultra-black-hearted sadist. Sata takes advantage of Erika's weakness and treats her like his dog.

My Thoughts
Seems like a typical plot for an entertaining shoujo series. I don't expect it to be incredibly deep, but I imagine it will be an enjoyable watch. I hope the main protagonist isn't too weak, because based on the plot summary it seems like she very well could be. But we'll see what sort of hijinks occur, and hopefully they don't make the lead female too weak to resist Kyouya's sadist tendencies...?

Kiseijuu/Parasyte

Synopsis
The 17-year-old Izumi Shinichi lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo. One night, worm-like aliens called Parasytes invade Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One Parasytes attempts to crawl into Shinichi's ear while he sleeps, but fails since he is wearing headphones, and enters his body by burrowing into his arm instead, taking over his right hand and is named Migi.
Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from travelling further up into his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. As the duo encounter other Parasytes, they capitalize on their strange situation and gradually form a strong bond, working together to survive. This gives them an edge in battling other Parasytes who frequently attack the pair upon realization that Shinichi's human brain is still intact. Shinichi feels compelled to fight other Parasytes, who devour humans as food, while enlisting Migi's help.

My Thoughts
Something that most people don't know about me is that I have a fascination with horror manga/anime. I love how creative and weird each series is, and this title doesn't seem to disappoint. It's such a gross idea that I'm pretty intrigued by where they're going to take it. I know it's not for everyone, but I thought I'd be honest and post that I'm going to watch it. If you're up for a little scare then check it out!

Check back for Part Two that I'll be posting later this week!
