We’re still freshly into the new anime season with each series
having 4 or 5 episodes to pick up and watch. Each new season makes me
excited along with a bit uneasy. Sometimes there really isn’t anything
to pique my interest, but luckily this season is plentiful! So let’s
start my list.
If you’ve watched the original Genshiken then I’d definitely recommend checking this out. But if you’re new to the series they do a good job on filling you in on who’s who, plus there’s a whole new female cast so you won’t be jumping into an already fleshed out series. The show starts within the first few weeks of school, the club finding new club members again so the cast is fresh for veterans and newbies alike.
What I really like about this anime is that it appeals directly to the Josei demographic (set in university, with a dominantly female cast). The girls are all otakus, and all have their quirks. The cast is likeable, the story is light and interesting, and it gives a female perspective of the fangirl demographic. Check it out! It’s exploring new territory with a comedic twist,
I have a soft spot for light-hearted shoujo, so Love-Lab hooked me right away. All the characters are likeable and funny making for a comedic look at high school romance. We all remember what it was like before we had our first boyfriend, we read Seventeen magazine incessantly, did those stupid quizzes, and giggled about cute boys until our lungs gave out. Sometimes it’s fun to travel back to those carefree days. Love-lab is a fun time all around.
Don’t ask me how I stumbled into this anime, but it had me smitten by the end of episode 1. That long confusing title means Stella Women’s Academy High School Division Class C3. I bet you’re looking at it and thinking “that anime with a bunch of young girls wielding guns right?” but you’re wrong! They’re airsoft BB guns. SO much better right? Well actually yeah. It’s a group of girls who play out war scenarios using BB guns, and it makes me want to run out and play some paintball. It’s definitely a Girl Power anime with a Slice of Life spin on it. Who knew playing with BB guns could help you learn about yourself as you go through high school? Each character is quirky and fun; it gets you hyped up to do something fun while showing that girls can kick butt too. I love it.
I don’t really know why I’m watching this one. I’ll be honest. The protagonist is so weird and unlikeable it almost makes me want to shut it off… but I don’t. So I can’t say I recommend this anime, but I will say it’s just weird enough to keep my attention. If you want to see a life in the perspective of a shut-in otaku then give it a shot. It makes you think about your weird tendencies, I think we all have them, however this protagonist has them all so there’s something strange for everyone. You’ll laugh and then some, but if it’s not for you I totally understand. I’m not sure if I’ll finish the series, but for now it has my attention.
This anime got my attention when I found out it’s by the same writer who did the hit manga/anime Working!! This time around however it’s set in a more adult setting of the welfare section of a ward office in Japan. You follow 3 newcomer young adults and there adventures being in a civil service job (fun right?). Well actually, this anime is light and enjoyable. No 2 characters are alike making for funny mishmashes as well as making light of situations that we all deal with in the workforce. Check it out if you’ve been feeling uninspired in the workplace!
Thanks for reading and I hope these suggestions will get you thinking about what to watch this anime season!
